Benefits and facilities

Here at HEFCE we appreciate that different people are often motivated by different things. We also recognise that you have responsibilities both inside and outside work. Which is why we've developed a 'total reward framework' in which we describe both the financial and non-financial benefits of working for us.

As it sounds, it's a reward framework which has been designed with you in mind. Want more flexible hours? We'll aim to work with you to come to a suitable arrangement. Looking for a loan for a bike to cycle to work? Consider it done.

"Since joining HEFCE I've gone part-time, working three days a week to balance my work commitments with my childcare arrangements."
Julia, Policy Officer

Our holiday allowance starts at 25 days per year plus UK bank holidays and rises to 30 days after five years' service. Beyond that, we will also consider requests for unpaid leave on a case-by-case basis. In addition to maternity pay in excess of the statutory requirements, we offer generous paternity leave.

Your salary will be reviewed annually, taking account of the results of your performance reviews. Whilst most of our roles are based in Bristol, appropriate London weighting will be applied to your salary if you are offered employment in the capital.

As part of our performance-related pay scheme you may be eligible for a cash bonus as part of your annual pay award. You can also join the highly regarded Civil Service pension scheme.

As well as our 'total reward framework', hidden benefits of working at HEFCE include HEFCE sports teams, subsidised nights out at the theatre, health screening every two years and annual eye tests.

Additional facilities at our Bristol Head Office include:

Office gym

For a healthy mind and body, make use of the gym at our Bristol office. It is equipped with weight training and cardiovascular equipment, including bikes and treadmills. You can also enjoy access to the recreation centre at neighbouring University of the West of England at a discounted rate, and we are a corporate member of Living Well health clubs.

Knowledge Centre

Our Knowledge Centre is a spacious open plan area, stocked with reference books, newspapers and magazines. It is available for informal meetings, study, or somewhere to glance through the paper.

Staff room

If you want to catch up with colleagues or relax in a comfy chair at lunchtime, our staff room is the perfect place. As well as the kitchen, complete with microwave, fridge, drink-making facilities and vending machines, there's a TV, DVD player and a selection of board games.

Inner Space

Want some quiet time? Head to the Inner Space, a room where individuals can take time out for contemplation or prayer.

Showers and lockers

We provide showers and lockers available to gym users and those who cycle to work.
